A device for raising the cover and seat of a W.C. basin comprises a foot pedal 2 carried by a lever 1 pivoted at 3 and carrying a toothed sector 4 which on depression of the lever from a horizontal position first meshes with a toothed wheel 5 associated with the cover 5<SP>1</SP> to raise the latter to the position shown, and on further depression of the lever meshes with a toothed wheel 6 to raise the seat 6<SP>1</SP>. A tooth 7 on wheel 5 engages a stop (not shown) to prevent further anticlockwise rotation of wheel 5 from the position shown.
