Abstract

768,870. Presses for separating liquids from solids. AMERICAN DEFIBRATOR, Inc. Feb. 8, 1955 [March 1, 1954], No. 3732/55. Class 46. Shafts 13, 26, each carrying a pressure disc (14, 25 respectively), are each inclined at a small angle to the horizontal, shown in Fig. 1, and at a small angle to the axis of the housing 33 for the discs, shown in Fig. 2. Each shaft is stepped and rotates in roller bearings 7, 10 and against a thrust bearing 11 within a sleeve 6 located in a bearing housing 5. Shaft 13 is driven by a motor 22, sprocket 20, chain 19, Figs. 2 and 5, and sprocket 18, Fig. 1; shaft 26 is not driven. Pulp or the like to be treated is delivered from a trough 57, Fig. 5, into a hopper 56 in which is driven a feed screw 58, the hopper communicating with an inlet passage 43, Fig. 2. The material passes round five-sixths of the region between the discs 14, 25, the residue being discharged at 45, Figs. 2 and 5, and the remaining one-sixth of the inter-disc region being closed by two radial walls 41, Fig. 1, and another (not shown). Access by the material to the inner ends of the shafts is prevented by a collar 46, Fig. 1, supported by the radial walls and a plate 40. Liquid discharged through screens 30 and perforated plates 28 on the discs, and falling from drip flanges 36 on the shafts, passes through perforations 38 in the housing 33 to a pipe 39. The bearing sleeve 6 for shaft 13 is secured in housing 5 but that for shaft 26 (and hence the shaft itself) is permitted limited axial movement. On excessive pressure building up between the pressure discs the right-hand sleeve 6 is forced outwards and rotates slightly a lever 64, Fig. 4, about a pivot 67 against the pressure of an adjustable spring 80, one end of which is accommodated in a fixed tubular part 81. A switch finger 83 on the lever 64 thereupon rocks a pivoted arm 86 to open a switch 87 controlling the circuit of the motor 61, Fig. 5, driving the feed screw 58. The switch 87 may also be arranged so that a greater movement of the switch finger causes the disc-driving motor 22 to be switched off. Alternatively the spacing between the discs may be controlled by the lever and adjustable-spring mechanism shown on the end of the sleeve 6 at the right-hand side of Fig. 2.
