A brake transmission mechanism for railway vehicles comprising an " empty-load " mechanism of the type described in Specification 426,779 and a double-acting slack adjuster 26 and wherein the compressed air to the brake cylinder 1 is controlled by a " unitary " triple valve such that the periods required for increasing and reducing the pressure in the cylinder on application and release of the brakes are largely independent of the brake piston stroke, is characterized in that the distance to which the lost motion of the connecting link that gives a leverage of lower order is reduced by the movable abutment 11 being cut into position for coaction with the abutment 12 on the link, is too small for equalizing the difference in brake piston stroke on braking with a leverage of higher order and on braking with leverage of a lower order and is invariably defined by the abutment on the link as a result of this abutment being arranged in a fixed and invariable position on the link.
