768,381. Tobacco smoke filters. ECUSTA PAPER CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1953], No. 30326/54. Class 130 [Also in Group VIII] Paper weighing not more than 25 grammes per square metre for forming a tobacco smoke filter is crumpled before folding in a paper wrapper. In Fig. 1 a number of layers of paper 2 weighing less than 16 grammes per square metre, e.g. paper made from high alpha cellulose pulp, are passed with a paper wrapper 1a through a conventional wrapping cone 3 which serves to crumple the paper the resulting filter rod being cut into plugs by a knife 12. The paper may be creped or embossed before crumpling and may be impregnated with a waterproofing agent such as melamine, formaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde resin, or viscose. In Fig. 3, three sheets 18, 19, 20 of embossed paper weighing about 20 grammes per square metre are separately crumpled by passing through sets of orifices of decreasing diameter in plates 28, 29, 30, the crumpled sheets being combined and subsequently wrapped in a wrapper. The sheets 18 ... 20 may be single sheets or sheets composed of several layers of paper and the paper may be substantially unfibrillated. The wrapper 1a may weigh about 20 grammes per square metre but preferably from 40 to 60 grammes per square metre.
