Abstract
768,126. Brazing. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1954 [Oct. 15, 1953], No. 28543/53. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group II] In preparing a surface of titanium, titanium alloys, e.g. titanium alloyed with chromium or iron or stainless or rustless steel for brazing the surface is heated in contact with a flux containing silver chloride to melt the flux and is abraded beneath the flux to ensure that it is wetted by metal deposited from the flux and brazing metal is deposited under cover of the flux to flow on the wetted surface. A piece of rolled sheet titanium 1 and an end of a rod 3 of a " silver-solder ", e.g. Easyflo, brazing metal are covered with a flux of silver chloride and copper chloride mixed in such proportions that the silver-copper content ratio is 70-30. An air-coal gas flame is passed over the flux to seal the latter and is then applied to the underside of the piece 1 to heat the piece to 700-800‹ C. The flux melts and the rod 3 is rubbed along the piece 1 to finally melt and adhere to the copper-silver deposited from the flux. The piece 1 and another piece of similarly treated titanium are clamped with a flux, e.g. borax therebetween and heated with a reducing flame obtained by adjusting the air and gas supplies to the burner 5. The brazing metal may be copper-zinc, copper zinc-silver or nickelsilver alloys. The silver chloride-copper chloride mixture may be such that the silver-copper ratio is between 80-20 and 60-40, e.g. 65-35.
