Abstract
767,472. Drawing; extruding. DOW CHEMICAL CO. March 7, 1955 [April 22, 1954], No. 6678/55. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for correcting the profile of an extruded section of light metal or alloy, comprises a die 20 composed of a number of segments 40 made of an oily, flaky solid substance, which segments define an opening of the desired profile of the section. The segments 40 are made of soap stone, molybdenum disulphide, or preferably graphite or a mixture composed predominantly of graphite. These segments are adjustably mounted on a backing plate 34 carried by a support member 30. The segments may be water-cooled. The extruded section 22 issuing from the extrusion die 14, which is preferably made of an alloy of magnesium or aluminium, passes through the opening 32 defined by the segments 40 and is attached to a cable 26 running on a winch 28 or other means for maintaining the section 22 under tension as it passes through the correcting die 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the correcting die 20 is mounted on the run-out table of the press and may be withdrawn therewith to allow a cutting saw to swing into position to sever the extruded section. The correcting die 20 is preferably mounted so as to adjust itself to the general shaping of the section without bending or kinking it.
