Abstract
1,148,579. Extruding. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 10 Oct., 1966, No. 45123/66. Heading B3P. A hot metal extruded product issuing from an extrusion press 26 is immediately quenched in a chamber 60. The product which may be of circular or other section and made from a billet of non-ferrous alloy, passes directly from the extrusion die 28 on to a run-out table 30 formed by a frame 34, 36 supporting a slab or slabs of graphite 52 provided with large openings (53), Fig. 4 (not shown). The table is pivoted at 40 to a coolant tank 12 and its other end is adjustable in height by screws 44. The frame 34, 36 also supports a hood 60 with end walls 67. Hood 60 carries pipes such as 74, 76, 78, 80 with control valves 82 and pressure gauges 84, for supplying the coolant, which is preferably water, to spray nozzles such as (75), (77), (79), (81), Fig. 3 (not shown). The coolant is supplied at high pressure such as by a pump, and is sprayed on to all parts of the periphery of the product; the control valves 82 enable the spray to be regulated to suit the cross-section of the product. Baffle plates (86), Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided within the hood to guide the extruded product and reduce escape of the coolant. The extreme outer nozzles are also angled to provide an inwardly directed curtain of water which also reduces splash. The open ends of the hood may also have curtains of resilient material. A further spray assembly 100 is mounted on a wheeled carriage 110 movable with variable speed along rails 116 by a fluid pressure motor 120 controlled by a timer 132. When the billet has been extruded and hence movement of the extruded product has ceased, a limit switch 138 is actuated by the press ram whereby the motor 120 is operated to move the spray assembly 100 towards the press. During this period the discard is sheared, and the product is finally withdrawn forwardly through the quenching chamber. Alternatively the entire hood 60 may be mounted on wheels for movement towards and away from the press.
