Abstract

767,219. Lubricating sprocket chains. CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO., Ltd., and HEMSLEY, T. B. April 1, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 16201/54. Class 12 (3). A sprocket chain lubricator comprises a rotatable carrier mounted coaxially with a sprocket wheel carrying the chain to be lubricated and provided with at least one lubricantcharging unit, means being provided for synchronizing the rotation of the carrier with that of the sprocket wheel to bring the charging unit opposite one of several lubricant-receiving nipples on the chain, means for moving the charging unit into, and from, engagement with the opposed nipple, and means for forcing lubricant through the charging unit into the nipple. In the construction shown, an annular housing 11 is rotatable about a sleeve 13 on a stationary shaft 14 on which the sprocket wheel 15 carrying chain rollers revolves. A clutch handle 16 can be operated to slide the sleeve 13 axially whereby pins 19 on the housing may register with holes 21 in the sprocket wheel to couple the housing and sprocket wheel together. The wall 20 of the housing is provided around its periphery with nipple connectors 23 each slidably mounted in a plunger 24. As the housing and sprocket wheel rotate together the connectors 23 register with nipples 27 of the chain rollers 28. Each plunger 24 is moved axially, against the pressure of a spring 29, by an arm of a bell-crank lever 30, the other arm of which has a roller 33 engaging a circular cam path 34 formed around the face of a disc 35 fixed on the sleeve 13. The connector 23 thereupon engages and centres itself upon an opposed nipple 27. At the same time an injector ram 36 is actuated by a striking cam 37 on the disc 35 to force lubricant through a spring-loaded valve 38 into a flexible pipe 39 from which the lubricant is fed to the nipple 27. Lubricant is fed to the ram 36 by means of a flexible pipe 41 connected through a manifold 42 and a flexible pipe 45 to a supply from a pump. In a modification only one charging unit is provided.
