Abstract

739,182. Lubricating. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1954 [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 4008/63. Class 12 (3). A lubricating device of the kind in which a pump plunger is arranged to discharge lubricant through a rotary distributer to each of a ring of delivery conduits in succession, through stepby-step movement of the distributer, is adapted to be actuated by a fluid-pressure or vacuumoperated piston through the medium of a thrusttransmitting member which operates the pump plunger and also operates pawl-and-ratchet means to effect the step-by-step movement of the distributer. As shown, a casing 1 is closed at one end by a detachable cap 2 which is provided with a ring 3 having a circular row of conduits 4. Each conduit communicates under the control of a spring-loaded valve 5 with an outlet 6 leading to a delivery pipe 7. The cap 2 is provided with a bearing 10 for the hub 11 of a rotary distributer, the hub having an axial bore to receive the pump plunger which is in two parts 14, 15 separated by a gap 12. The bore has an inlet port 13 and an outlet port 20 which communicates through a passage 22 in the hub, a passage 23 in a radial delivery arm 24 and a passage in a plug 26 with one of the conduits 4 leading to a delivery pipe 7. When the pump plunger is operated lubricant in the gap 12 is eventually forced along these passages to one of the conduits 4. The size of the gap 12 may be adjusted by means of a cam 28 engaging a flange 24 on the part 15 of the plunger. The part 14 has a cap 45 adapted to be engaged by a roller 42 on a pivoted, bifurcated arm 41 formed integrally with a shaft 39 mounted in bearings 40. The arm 41 is engaged by the rod 36 of a piston 33 which is operated by fluid pressure supplied through a port 35. As the piston reciprocates the shaft 39 -oscillates and by means of a pin 56 projecting from the shaft and a U-shaped slot 54, effects the oscillation of a pawl-carrier 49, the pawl of which co-operates with a ratchet 46 fixed to the distributer. The arrangement is such that during the delivery stroke of the pump plunger the pawl rides over the teeth of the ratchet, but on the return stroke the ratchet wheel is moved one step by the pawl whereby the delivery arm of the distributer registers with the next of the conduits 4. In a modification the axis of the piston which is vacuum-operated is at right angles to the axis of the pump plunger.
