The feeding and receiving tracks 15, 16 or 22, 23 at the top or bottom of a pit hoist 10 are arranged one above the other on the same side of the shaft. As illustrated, each cage 11, 12 has four decks, although only three cars are hoisted at a time. Thus a loaded car 13, can be moved on to the lower 23 of two pairs of tracks at the pit head while an unloaded car is moved from one of an upper pair of tracks 22 into the cage 11. 'The cage may then be moved upwardly through the spacing of one deck for a similar transfer of cars to be made and this can be repeated until the three loaded cars have been discharged and three emptied cars fed to the cage. A similar procedure permits loaded cars to be moved into a cage 12 from a track 15 at the bottom of the shaft while emptied cars are discharged to a track 16. Instead of the cages being gradually moved upwards at the pit head and downwards at the pit bottom during decking their motions may be reversed, the positions of the tracks 15, 16 and 22, 23 being similarly reversed. The cars may be fed by gravity, e.g. by inclining the floors of the cages, or by suitably disposed rams, and hoists 17, 27 transfer cars between the pairs of tracks. A tippler 25 unloads the cars at the pit head while a conveyer 19 loads them at the pit bottom.
