Abstract

Naphthalene having a solidification point greater than 79 DEG C is obtained by cooling naphthalene oil to a temperature at which at least a part of the naphthalene is crystallized and treating it in a continuously operating worm press or other pressing means, the cylindrical external wall of which is preferably arranged horizontally and is formed with slots or holes through which the expressed oil discharges outwardly, the expressed oil being collected in at least two separate fractions, the latter one of which being rich in naphthalene is immediately again mixed with the starting material, after optional cooling. Preferably the initial material is at a temperature less than 60 DEG C. and is in the form of coarsely crystalline naphthalene. The pressing means may comprise extrusion presses, thrust centrifuges, or worm centrifuges. The pressing may either be effected by using two separate worm presses, and so choosing the individual pressures that the second press supplies a final product which has a solidification point of at least 79 DEG C., or by using a single worm press in which the expressed oil is formed with a substantially equal quantitative distribution throughout the entire length of the press housing, a higher pressure being set up at the beginning of the worm.
