Abstract

549,427. Moulding plastic material to form foraminous bodies. PEARS, H. W. K., and SLACK, H. F. Oct. 10, 1941, No. 13062. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] Bodies composed wholly or partly of material of both a soluble and plastic or thermoplastic character are formed into a foraminous mass in an apparatus comprising a press, a die plate consisting of a plate having an opening therein, a second plate arranged in spaced relationship to the first plate, a series of pegs of polygonal, triangular, square, rectangular or of differing cross sectional outline carried by said second plate and arranged parallel to and in spaced relationship to each other, said pegs extending into the opening on the first plate, and openings in the second plate to permit the passage of the material to the interstices between the pegs. Compounds mentioned as suitable for extrusion in the above apparatus include mixture of oils, fats, fatty acids and waxes, meal pap, flour, cereals, chocolate and cheese or mixtures of some or all of these materials. The foraminous product formed by means of the apparatus of the present invention possesses walls which may be very thin, and which are always of uniform thickness. The products are accordingly easily soluble in solvents. Meal pap, flour and cereals require partial gelatination, usually followed by partial dehydration and admixture with binding agents to produce a plastic material suitable for extrusion. In Fig. 3 a represents a circular steel plate which fits into the discharge orifice of the press, e is a second plate disposed in spaced relationship to the first plate and fastened thereto by the screws b. Metal pegs d are screwed into plate e. The paste passes from the press through a multiplicity of holes g in the plate e on its passage around and between the pegs d. Specifications 183,337, [Class 87 (ii)], and 371,680 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 545,116.
