Abstract

A fertilizer is produced by subjecting waste material such as leather, hide or the like or wool to the effect of steam at a pressure of 8 to 15 atmospheres to reduce the material to a semi-liquid condition, concentrating by heating, reducing the water content to 2 to 10%, and then cooling the product so formed. It may be extruded and formed into tablets while cooling, or crushed to a powder when cold. In an example, 100 parts of hide waste are heated for 45 minutes at 13 atmospheres steam pressure to produce 80 parts of fertilizer with 4% residual mositure.
