Abstract

766,278. Surgical pads. ROTTER, H. Aug. 20, 1954, No. 24277/54. Class 81(2) A pad for application against a human leg consists of a body of porous material which covers at least partially the ankle zone and at least the lower third part of the leg and has a rib which grips the ankle from behind and underneath. A pad 3 for use on the outer side of a leg consists of an elongated body of spongelike material, e.g. foam or sponge rubber, and is provided on the inside with a longitudinal rib 7 which curves at the lower end to grip the ankle from behind and underneath when in use. The rib 7 is tapered at the sides to the edges of the pad 3 and is broken in the region 10 of the knee. A slit may be formed in the upper part of the pad 3. A second pad 2 for use on the inner side of the leg is shorter than the outer pad 3, has a convex inner surface and is J-shaped to grip the ankle from behind and underneath. The pads 2, 3 are secured to the leg by a casing 1 of porous sheet material which is held in position by clips and bandaging or a rubber stocking. At the lower edge, the two sides of the casing 1 are connected by a textile band 11. The pads 2, 3 may be secured to the casing 1 by air pervious adhesive material or may be moulded in one piece with the casing 1. The pads 2, 3 alternatively may be held in place against the leg by a rubber stocking, knee-boot or gaiter-like construction to which they may be secured at the ankle end only. To facilitate the sliding-on of a rubber stocking the pads 2, 3 may be partially covered by paper or textile material. Portions of the pads may include inflatable tubes.
