Abstract
Abrasive compositions for use in polishing metals are obtained from natural or crude aluminium oxide ores such as bauxite by calcining the crude ore in a furnace with a non-reducing atmosphere at a temperature in the range 500-1800 DEG C., preferably 800-1300 DEG C., so that the ore is not fused, and then grinding the calcined product to a fine powder, conveniently after a preliminary crushing. The abrasive powder may be used as such, or may be incorporated in fluid abrasive compositions by employing petrol, alcohol or ammonia as carriers. Alternatvely the powder may be mixed with waxes or organic or inorganic greases to form abrasive pastes.
