Abstract
The invention comprises 2 : 5-di-(C1-C6)-alkoxy - 2 - carbamyltetrahydrofurans and their conversion to 2 : 3-pyridinediols by reaction with an aqueous medium having a pH value not exceeding 7. The above tetrahydrofurans may be substituted by alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and/or aralkyl radicals in the 3-, 4- and 5-positions, while "alkoxy" includes methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, amyloxy and hexyloxy. The 2 : 5-di-(C1-C6)-alkoxy-2-carbamyltetrahydrofurans are prepared by reacting an ester (preferably a methyl ester) of a corresponding 2 : 5 - di - (C1-C6) - alkoxy - tetrahydrofuroic acid with ammonia. The conversion to the 2 : 3-pyridinediol is preferably effected at atmospheric pressure under reflux temperatures between 60-120 DEG C. and in presence of hydrochloric, sulphuric or acetic acids. The examples describe the preparation of 2 : 5-dimethoxy-2-carbamyltetrahydrofuran and 2 : 3-pyridinediol. The preparation of n-cetyl-(2 : 3-dihydroxy-pyridinium) chloride is also referred to.
