765,496. Extruding. BALDWIN-LIMAHAMILTON CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1954 [Nov. 19, 1953], No. 32381/54. Class 83 (4). A billet container for a metal extrusion press comprises a plurality of concentric parts 10, 11, 12 tightly fitted one within another, the outermost part 12 consisting of a number of rings 15. The rings are manipulated more easily than a unitary casing, which is advantageous in the case of heavy presses. Annular recesses provided in the mating faces of adjacent rings form grooves 16 for housing temperature-control elements 17. Covers 20 are provided for the grooves. The elements 17, are preferably electric resistance heaters supplied through variable resistances 37 and switches 40 from a common source 36. The heaters are controlled individually by thermostats 18 which act through Wheatstone bridges 25 on contacts 26. The heaters may be controlled to provide any desired pattern of heating or heat gradient along the length of the container by means of the resistances 37 or the switches 40. A selector switch may be provided for closing or opening the various heating circuits. Instead of heating units, cooling elements may be provided for the temperature control.
