Abstract
765,489. Purifying radio-isotopes. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 26, 1955 [Sept. 25, 1954], No. 27760/54. Class 39(4). Radioactive phosphorus is obtained from neutron irradiated sulphur by distilling off the sulphur and taking up the residue with a mineral acid. After irradiation in a flux of 10<12> neutrons/square centimetre per second for 28 days with the sulphur in a silica vessel, the sulphur is distilled off at about 500‹C. in the presence of nitrogen. The sulphur thus increases in purity and may be further irradiated. The phosphorus is removed as phosphoric acid with hydrochloric acid containing some hydrogen peroxide. The specification also describes the recovery of phosphorus-by oxidation with nitric acid and treating with iron or lanthanum.
