Abstract
933,429. Producing neutrons. S. AMIEL, and A. NIR. May 31, 1962 [June 6, 1961], No. 21058/62. Class 39 (4). A neutron source comprises a radio-active emitter of alpha particles having an energy of at least 4 Mev and an oxygenous target material enriched in O<SP>18</SP>, means being provided for bringing the target to such proximity to the emitter as to set off neutron emission, and means being provided for separating them to interrupt neutron emission. The target may be a metal oxide, for example Be<SP>9</SP>O<SP>18</SP>, or water, or oxygen, or a gaseous compound of oxygen such as carbon dioxide. In one example Th<SP>228</SP> is placed in a glass tube and covered with water of which the O<SP>18</SP> content amounts to 80% of the total oxygen. The water can be removed by distillation or by displacement by an immiscible inert liquid of different density. In another example, PO<SP>210</SP> is deposited on platinum wire and enclosed in an evacuated glass tube. Oxygen containing 90% O<SP>18</SP> is admitted to the tube through a valve and can be evacuated from the tube through the valve.
