Abstract

765,407. Compression testing. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 25, 1955 [May 17, 1954], No. 5654/55. Class 106 (2). The resilient plastic sample A supported on the frame 10 by means 14, 15 is subjected to a constant pre-load by means of a pressure foot 17 slidable on guide rods 16 and to a test-load 24 slidable in the frame below the support 14, the test-load 24 being attached to a carriage 28 which is reciprocated to apply and remove the test-load to and from the sample at uniform intervals, a gauge 51, engaging the pressure foot 17, measuring the deflection of the sample under pre-load and test load. As shown, the pressure foot 17 is integral with an upwardly extending yoke 20 through which extends the lower plate 30 of the carriage 28 and on lowering of the carriage the plate 30 contacts a sphere 23 located in the pressure foot centrally over the sample whereby the test load is applied to thereto. The carriage is reciprocated by means of a motor-driven eccentric 42 and by a rod 36 engaging on its upward stroke only with the upper plate 29 of the carriage. A release mechanism, operated by a hand lever 56 and comprising rods 61 engageable with a plate 27 on the test load 24 enables the test load and, by engagement of the plate 30 with the upper part of the yoke 20, the pre-load to be lifted free of the sample.
