584,055. Testing physical qualities of materials. COPE & COPE, Ltd., COTTON, J. H., and COPE, C. J. Dec. 4, 1944, No. 24242. [Class 106 (ii)] In an instrument for measuring the deformation of materials under compression and tension, the application of the load to the test sample is permitted by an electromagnet which is switched off by the operator at the initiation of a test. A platen u is supported from a pivot m on a lever arm k pivoted to the main pillar d of the instrument at j. A weight n tends to lift the platen u which, however, is held down by an electromagnet mounted in the base v. A sample for a compressive test is placed on the platen beneath an abutment x which is adjusted to almost contact the sample. The electromagnet is then switched off and the platen is raised by the leverage of the weight n, the load increasing as the weight descends to compensate for the increasing cross-sectional area of the test piece. A recording is made by a pen 3 on a clock-driven drum (not shown). Samples for tensile tests are carried by hooks 11 and 12, and in this case the lever arm k is reverted and mounted in the lower position (shown dotted) so that the load decreases as the cross-sectional area decreases.
