Abstract
Cellulose acetate filaments, threads, fibres, artificial horse hairs, films and like articles having an acetyl value of 45 to 52 per cent calculated as acetic acid, the distribution of the acetyl groups throughout the molecules being homogeneous, are obtained by extruding a solution of cellulose acetate having an acetyl value greater than 58 per cent into a coagulating bath and submitting the so formed articles, after substantially freeing them from solvent but before drying, to the action of a mineral alkali or of ammonia or an amine in a liquid medium substantially free from swelling agents or solvents for the acetate. In a modification the articles, prior to saponification, may be submitted to at least one drying, but in this case a weak base, e.g. an amine or ammonia, must be employed for saponification. The articles are characterized in that, after dyeing with substantive or plastosoluble dyes, they show a homogeneous dyeing throughout their cross-section and that they swell by at least 55 per cent of their volume on immersion in distilled water at 20-25 DEG C. for 15 hours.
