Abstract
Dextran of very high molecular weight is irradiated with high energy electrons to yield depolymerized dextran having, for example, a molecular weight ranging between 25,000 and 100,000, suitable for clinical use. The energy of the electrons may range from 50,000 to 20 million electron volts. The dextran may be irradiated with 106 to 108, preferably 107, Roentgen units in a polyethylene container sterilization of the dextran and cross-linking of the polyethylene taking place simultaneously with depolymerization of dextran. The dextran may be irradiated in an atmosphere of air, nitrogen, argon, helium, krypton or xenon.ALSO:Dextran of very high molecular weight is irradiated with high energy electrons to yield depolymerized dextran having, for example, a molecular weight ranging between 25,000 and 100,000, suitable for clinical use. The energy of the electrons may range from 50,000 to 20 million electron volts. The dextran may be irradiated with 106 to 108, preferably 107, Roentgen units in a polyethylene container, sterilization of the dextran and cross-linking of the polyethylene taking place simultaneously with depolymerization of dextran. The irradiated dextran may be dissolved in water and a clinically useful fraction may be precipitated by adding methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol. The dextran may be irradiated in an atmosphere of air, nitrogen, argon, helium, krypton or xenon.
