Abstract
764,348. Angular bending; coiling. COMPAGNE DE PONT-A.-MOUSSON. Jan. 13, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954; April 30, 1954], No. 1109/55. Class 83 (4). A bending pattern is secured to a pipe &c. to be bent and is engaged by a follower carried by a chassis movable along the pipe, the chassis also carrying means for heating the pipe on the inside of the band. A pipe T to be bent in a horizontal plane is held at one end by jaws 1, 2, its free end being supported by a carriage 4 having a roller 5 engaging a fixed runway 6. Mounted on the pipe is a chassis C comprising rear bars 11, front bars 12, rear uprights 13, cross-members 14 and strengthening stays 15; when the chassis is in position on the pipe, the front bars 12 are connected together by spacer elements 16 held fast by keys 17. Rollers 18 adjustably mounted in the chassis engage the pipe. A roller 22 adjustably mounted in the chassis engages a bending pattern 9 secured to the pipe by a strap 8. The chassis also carries burners 28 surrounded by a casing 25, 26 lined with asbestos 27. A support 33 secured to the pipe carries a winch 32, the cable 31 passing round a pulley 30 on the end of the chassis, a return pulley 34 and having secured to its end a weight 35. In operation, the winch 32 is actuated to raise the weight; as the pipe softens under the action of the heaters, the weight 35 pulls the chassis along the pipe, the engagement of the roller 22 with the bending pattern 9 effecting the bend. To continue the bend, a roller 38, Fig. 3, is mounted on the chassis so as to contact the bent portion which thus acts as a bending pattern. The bending pattern 9 may be shaped to produce twisted bends. An abutment may be fixed on the pipe at the required position to actuate a switch on the chassis so as to give a signal denoting the end of the bending operation. In a modification, the chassis C<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, comprises a metal beam 69 on which are carried rollers 70, 71 for guiding the chassis along the pipe T<SP>1</SP>, and a roller 72 which co-operates with the bending pattern 57 secured to the pipe by a strap 55. The chassis also carries burners 90 enclosed in a casing 85, 86. A carriage D, Fig. 13, has rollers 59 engaging the pipe and is normally latched to the template 57 by the hook end 66 of a pivoted lever 62. When the follower roller 72 has traversed the pattern 57 it first contacts the end 67 of the lever 62 to release the carriage D from the pattern 57 and then engages a part 68 on the carriage D so as to move the latter along the pipe to continue the bending operation. The chassis C<SP>1</SP> is urged along the pipe by a weight 100 and cable 95. Electric heaters may be used instead of burners;
