A pipe bender has a plunger for moving a pipe-bending shoe between a pair of pipe engaging reaction blocks pivotally mounted in selected holes of several series formed in a normally fixed plate and extending in opposite directions away from the path of advancement of the shoe, one of the reaction blocks being movable to actuate a device adapted to indicate the extent to which the pipe has been bent by the plunger shoe. A bending shoe 19 or 21 is detachably secured to a ram 8 guided in a ram cylinder 9 and actuated by a lever-operated hydraulic pump. A plate 10 fixed to the cylinder 9 has two series of holes 11, 12 diverging away from the cylinder end and two further diverging series of holes 41, 42. Another plate 13 similarly formed with holes 14, 15 and 43, 44 is detachably secured to the cylinder 9 parallel to the plate 10. Two reaction blocks 22 are mounted to pivot about pins 50 in selected holes of the plates 10, 13. Each block 22 has four side grooves 49 of different widths to accommodate different sizes of pipe 59 to be bent. An angle indicator plate 23 is attached to one of the blocks 22, two pins 52 (not shown) on the plate 23 engaging a suitable two of four sockets 51 in the block 22, so that the indicator plate 23 turns with the block 22 as the latter is moved about its pivot on the bending of the pipe by the shoe 19 or 21 between the blocks 22. If the indicator 23 extends outside the plate 13 lines 53 on the indicator co-operate with a line 39 through the holes 14 to indicate the extent of the bend. If the indicator 23 is positioned to lie between the plates 10, 13 marked circles 54 on the indicator show through the holes 14 to indicate the extent of the bend. A scale 34 on the ram 8.indicates the extent of its forward movement. The apparatus can be used for straightening pipes in which case the blocks 22 are pivoted in the holes 41, 42 and 43,44.
