764,233. Stabilizing polymers. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc. Jan. 24, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 2124/55. Class 2 (6). [Also in Group IV (b)] Chlorine-containing polymers, e.g. vinyl chloride homopolymers, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers or vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers, are stabilized by adding one or more tertiary acetylenic alcohols or glycols. The alcohols or glycols are preferably of the formula where R 2 is either -H or R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms and R 1 is an alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group, e.g. methyl, ethyl, benzyl, cyclopropyl or phenyl. Specified compounds are: 2 - methyl - 3 - butyn - 2 - o1; 3 - methyl - 1 - pentyn - 3 - ol ; 3 - methyl - 1 - nonyn - 3 - ol ; 2,5 - dimethyl - 3 - hexyne - 2,5 - diol ; 2,5 - diphenyl - 3 - hexyne - 2,5 - diol; 3,6 - dimethyl - 4 - octyne - 3,6 - diol ; 4,7 - dimethyl - 5 - decyne - 4,7 - diol and 2,4,7,9 - tetramethyl - 5 - decyne-4,7-diol. Known stabilizers such as barium stearate, cadmium ethylhexoate, dibutyl tin maleate, the pyrroles, pyridine or thymol and plasticisers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, may also be present.
