763,879. Drying or cooling grain &c. MADER, J. Jan. 4, 1955 [Jan. 5, 1954], No. 200/55. Classes 34(2) and 64(2) Apparatus for drying or cooling grain &c. in which hot or cool air is passed through the louvred walls 4 of a receptacle or receptacles 5 has the cross-section of the air outlet 9 smaller than the crosssection of the air inlet 3 and the louvred walls 4 convergent from top to bottom so that the thickness of material layer decreases from top to bottom to vary the air flow resistance and keep the pressure drop uniform throughout the height. The grain is fed from a container 6 controlled by a slide 7 in batches and withdrawn through a slide 8, air being supplied past a heater 2 by a fan 1 and withdrawn via passages 9, 10 and conduit 11. In a modification, passage 3 has a wedge-shaped partition wall 12 instead of the walls of receptacle 5 being convergent; in another, walls connecting the louvred walls converge in the direction of air flow. In further modifications, the louvred walls form coaxial square- or circular-sectional columns, the air inlet passage being around the walls and the air outlet passage at the axis of the columns.
