Abstract

763,799. Fuel injectors. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Jan. 24, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 2031/55. Class 7 (3) An outwardly opening fuel injection valve 22 is held closed by a permanent magnet 30 positioned above the valve stem 25. The magnet 30 is of hard ferromagnetic material and is surrounded by a soft fer romagnetic shell 31 in contact at 32 with one pole of the magnet 30 and spaced from the remainder of the magnet by a non- magnetic sleeve 33. The stem 25 of the valve 22 has loosely connected thereto a disc-shaped armature 23 which is attracted by the magnet 30 and which co-operates with a stop 20 to limit the opening movement of the valve. The fuel is supplied at 37 and flows to the valve through a filter 34, holes 44 in the shell 31, grooves 45 in the sleeve 33, and holes 46 in the armature 23, any metallic particles in the fuel being prevented from reaching the valve seat of the magnet 30. The nozzle parts are contained within a sleeve 14 which is mounted in a precombustion chamber 10. The valve 22 seats on a seat 17 which is supported in a hardened tip 15 by a soft metal spacer ring 18 which prevents distortion of the tip or seat when the nozzle is secured in position.
