Abstract

Textile materials are rendered water-repellent by treating them with an emulsion of a silicone oil in an aqueous solution of pH 2 to 8 comprising an alkali metal salt of an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl siliconic acid and a water-soluble thermosetting synthetic resin precondensate, and thereafter heating the materials. The silicone oils contain from 1.0 to 3.0, preferably from 1.0 to 2.1 organo groups, e.g. alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, per silicon atom. The alkali metal salt of the siliconic acid contains from 0.2 to 1.4, preferably from 0.8 to 1.2 organo groups per silicon atom. The resin precondensates are water-soluble condensation products of phenols, e.g. phenol, m-cresol or mixtures of cresols, xylenols and resorcinol, or of amino compounds, e.g. urea, with aldehydes, e.g. formaldehyde. Catalysts for the conversion of the silicone oil to a product of higher molecular weight, such as zirconyl chloride octahydrate, may be added. The silicone oil may be first emulsified with water-soluble cellulose ethers, or sulphonated compounds such as salts of sulphonated methyl oleate, or, according to the Provisional Specification, the reaction products of oleic acid with di- or tri-ethanolamine, and diluted if required, the thermosetting resin precondensate then being added, followed by an aqueous solution of the alkali metal salt of the siliconic acid, the pH of which has been adjusted to the range 2 to 8 by addition of dilute acid. Pigments, fillers and delustring agents may also be included. The textiles treated include woven, knitted and felted fabrics containing e.g. regenerated cellulose fibres, silk, wool, "Ardil" (Registered Trade Mark) protein fibre, synthetic linear superpolyamides, polyester fibres such as "Terylene" (Registered Trade Mark) and polyacrylonitrile fibres. In examples, solutions containing sodium methyl siliconate, urea-formaldehyde pre-condensate, silicone oil emulsion and zirconyl chloride octahydrate are applied to spun viscose rayon fabrics.
