Abstract
A process for the manufacture of 3 : 5 : 8 : 10-tetrabromopyrene comprises reacting pyrene in a finely dispersed state in aqueous suspension with an excess of bromine. The pyrene may be dispersed by grinding with water in a mill, with a wetting or dispersing agent, if desired, such as sodium dibutyl-naphthalene sulphonate. Bromine is added to the suspension as such, or dissolved in a solution of sodium or potassium bromide. A solution promoter, such as nitrobenzene, trichlorobenzene or carbon tetrachloride, may be added to the suspension. The reaction temperature may be 70 DEG to 90 DEG C. Bromine may be recovered from the hydrogen bromide formed by means of chlorine or sodium chlorate and sulphuric acid. Examples of the process are given.
