Classes 72 and 82(1) Reduction of finely divided ores, in particular those of iron, copper, nickel, cobalt and chromium, which are reducible by hydrogen or by hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is effected in suspension with the gaseous reducing agent. Either solid or liquid metals can be obtained. The stream of gas separated from the reduced material is regenerated by carbon-containing substances and, if necessary, purifying agents and is recycled so that a gas circulation independent of any extraneous source of gas is maintained. Powdered ore is blown into a reduction chamber A after preheating at B, and meets reduction gas. The used gas and the reduced metal pass into precipitators D, E and electro-static filter F, the metal being recovered an cooled at G by air which thus preheats B. The gas is recycled by pump I, carburized at K and de-sulphurized at M by quicklime. In a modification (not shown) the metal-laden gas is heated to precipitate molten metal
