Abstract

763,231. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 22, 1952 [Jan. 22, 1951], No. 1626/51. Class 39(4). To avoid approaching critical mass in a first heat exchanger, heat from a liquid metal homogeneous nuclear reactor is transferred to an intermediate liquid metal circuit and thence to a second heat exchanger. Liquid lead with U235 in solution is circulated by a pump 9 through a beryllia core 1, headers 4 and four heat exchangers 6. Heat is transferred to liquid sodium and this metal-to-metal transfer is efficient and results in small exchangers 6 of the shell and tube type which may be as described in Specification 732,778 [Group XIII]. Ring mains 13, 14 connect the sodium circuits of the heat exchangers 6 and through inlet and outlet branches with steam generator plant which may comprise a "Velox" (Registered Trade Mark) or Loeffler plant. A partial reflector 5 of graphite, beryllia or water surrounds the core and the core, heat exchangers and ring mains are embedded in a dense concrete shield 17.
