Abstract

762,862. Volume control. PYE, Ltd. June 16, 1954 [June 22, 1953], No. 17216/53. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] A gain control arrangement comprises a rectifier bridging an attenuator network and with switching means to render the rectifier inoperative at will. With the switch S1 open, the rectifier M1 is biased via resistor R4 to be conductive and transmits signal without substantial attenuation. With the switch S1 open, rectifier M1 is biased via resistors R4, R5, R6 to be non-conductive. Signal is then transmitted via an attenuating potentiometer R2, R3 and the reversely-connected rectifier M2 which is conductive when rectifier M1 is non- conductive and vice versa. A number of such arrangements, either in cascade or placed between successive pairs of stages in an amplifier, may be provided so as to allow of the signal being attenuated in steps. The arrangement provides for controlling the gain of an amplifier at a remote point and several channels may be controlled simultaneously. It may also be applied to fade-over circuits.
