Abstract

[Also in Group XIV] An expansible stair rod or supporting rail for garments or curtains comprises a close-coiled spring in an expansible sheath, anchoring means being provided at each end for connection to a headed fixing screw or stud and being formed to enclose the head of the screw or stud. As shown, in a stair rod, the shank 3a of an eye 3 is screwed into the end of a wire spiral 1 covered by a plastic sheath 2, the rim 5 of a dome 4 being spun over the eye and covering the head 6 of a fixing screw engaged by the eye. A plastic sleeve 8 covers the junction of the eye to the spiral. In a modification the dome is of stouter metal and is secured to the spiral by a stamped out plate the head of which is received in the dome and which has a flat shank projecting through an aperture in the dome for threaded engagement with the spiral. When supporting garments or curtains stand-off screws are employed.
