[Also in Group XXXVI] In a point contact crystal rectifier, the ends of the whisker electrode and an associated support pin are embedded in a body of metal. Fig. 1 shows an insulating tube 1 containing a semi-conductor crystal 7 welded, soldered or cemented to support-pin 5, and an associated whisker electrode 3 maintained in contact with its nickel support pin 2 by means of a body of metal 4. The body of metal 4 may consist of 90 per cent lead and 10 per cent antimony. The whisker plug assembly may be preformed as shown in Fig. 2, in which the ends of support 2 and whisker 3 are inserted in moulding cavity 15 which is filled with the metallic powder 4. Pressure is then applied by forcing down a plunger, to provide whisker assembly 2, 4, 3 similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Lead shot may be used for the moulding metal body and the grooved formation of the mould element 14 enables the lead to surround the end of the whisker element even if, as in the alternative shown in Fig. 6, this does not touch the end of the support 2. Other soft metal initially in the form of powder, beads or wire may be used to unite the whisker and support member.
