Abstract
<FORM:0762353/III/1> <FORM:0762353/III/2> In a distilling apparatus suitable, e.g. for distilling brine, the heating chamber or chambers 1, 2 are provided with parallel sets of nested U-shaped steam tubes 18a, b, c, of flattened cross-section, opposite ends of the tubes being mounted in a common tube plate 21, and being swaged to circular shape of diameter less than the major diameter of the flattened parts of the tubes. The major diameter of the tube cross-section is in the plane of the U. The upper ends of the tubes open into a steam chest 22 and the lower ends into a condensate chest 23. The steam chest is provided with steam from a channel 24 inside the heating chamber, and supplied with steam at its ends, via ports 26 in the wall of the heating chamber and in the tube plate. Condensate is similarly removed by a channel 25. The lower ends 30 of the steam tubes are preferably shaped as in Fig. 4 to prevent trapping of condensate. Alternatively the lower limbs of the tubes may be sloped as in Fig. 2. The remainder of the apparatus is similar to that described in Specification 707,887.
