761,722. Boring earth and rock. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 25398/54. Class 85. Means for removing spoil from the vicinity of a hole excavated by an auger comprise a enclosure 5 surrounding the top of the hole, but allowing passage of the auger into the hole, with an annular trough 7 around the enclosure 5 to receive spoil raised by the auger and means for moving the spoil in a circular path to an outlet shoot 13. The outer wall 9 of the trough extends upwards and supports through members 10 a disc 11 which carries a bearing housing 12 for the auger shaft 4. A sun wheel 20, which is axially movable on but driven by the shaft 4, engages planet wheels 21, mounted on pins fixed to a paddle plate 19, which engage an internally toothed gear ring 22, prevented from rotating by a band brake 23 fixed by a bracket 26 to the disc 11 and engaging the outer surface of the ring 22. Rotation of the shaft 4 rotates the paddle plate 19 carrying paddles 18 which sweep the trough 7. If the paddles jam then the gear ring 22 slips in the band brake and prevents damage. With a smaller size auger a liner 15, Fig. 1, is used to take up the annular space between the auger and the enclosure 5. In another embodiment the bottom of the groove 7 is formed by a flat annular plate which is rotated by a separate motor to move the spoil against a baffle plate which diverts it into the shoot 13.
