Abstract

753,917. Earth-excavating apparatus. UNITED ELECTRIC COAL COS. May 3, 1954, No. 12819/54. Class 68(1) Earth is excavated from a bank by a series of cutters moved in a horizontal and vertical direction simultaneously and confined between the first and a second series of cutters, horizontally spaced from but moved in unison with the first series of cutters, until the earth has travelled away from the bank to a point where it is discharged from between the series of cutters. In a preferred apparatus the digging unit consists of a rotatable structure on which' is circumferentially secured spaced-apart rows of radially extending blades 38, each of which is inclined from the outside towards the inside of the structure in the direction of rotation thereof. The strucfture may be a drum or two wheels 30, 32 secured to a common axle 24 extending through and journalled in a housing 18 at the end of a boom 10, which supports a conveyer 12. Earth cut by the series of blades engaging the bank passes into the space between the rows of blades and is removed from this space by a plate 44 on to the conveyer.
