Abstract
758,051. Mining machines. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. March 25,1955 [April 8, 1954], No. 10372/54. Class 68(1) A longwall mining machine has a rotatable carrier 8 and at least one (three being shown) rotatable star wheel 16 mounted eccentrically on the carrier 8, each star wheel 16 being provided with a plurality of wedgeshaped projections 18, which may be detachable, adapted to detach mineral from a seam face. There may also be a roof star wheel 19 and a floor scraper 20 or a floor star wheel, the distance between the roof star wheel 19 and the floor member being adjustable according to the depth of the seam. The carrier 8 is rotated by means of a haulage cable 14 wound round a drum connected to the carrier 8 through gearing or other means. The cable 14 may also be used with the aid of rope wheels to move the machine along the face or separate haulage means may be employed. The star wheels 16, 19 may rotate freely on stub shafts or be driven. The machine is sup- . ported on rollers 5 which run on side supports of a conveyer on to which coal may. be deflected by scrapers, loading ploughs, or shovel blades attached to and rotating with the carrier.
