Abstract

761,431. Tractors. WEBSTER, N. March 30, 1953 [March 28, 1952], No. 7939/52. Classes 79(1), 79(2) and 79(5). A motor tractor comprises two driven units, namely a front unit 1, Fig. 2, including a power unit 5, gear box 6 and reduction gears, road axle and wheels 4 and a rear unit 2 including a shaft S, Fig. 3, driven from the unit 1, a reduction gear, road axle and wheels, the rear unit being in driving connection with the front unit by being pivotally connected, at 11, by means of a tubular casing 12, about a vertical axis passing through the centre about which a driven planet bevel gear 9, Fig. 3, oscillates, a steering mechanism being provided which enables the front unit 1 to be pivoted relative to the rear unit 2 and so control the direction of the tractor, which mechanism comprises a quadrant gear 14 fixed to the front unit and in mesh with a worm 15 mounted on the rear unit. The tubular casing 12, Fig. 2, en. closes the shaft S and has pivots 11 engaging in bearings 13 formed on the casing of the unit 1. Referring to Fig. 3, the shaft from the gear box 6 drives a bevel.gear 7 which through the medium of the planet bevel gear 9 drives a bevel gear 8 on the shaft S. The planet bevel gear 9 is mounted on a carrier 10 provided with teeth 20 which mesh with a fixer gear 19 on the unit I so that when the tractor is turned the gear 9 is rotated with the carrier in order to cancel the disturbing action between those gears and the main drive shaft. Slight axial movement of the bevel gear 8 towards the rear of the tractor is permitted when the tractor is turned in order to maintain correct mesh between the gears 7, 8 and 9. This effect is achieved by semi-circular slots in members 22 mounted in the carrier 10<SP>1</SP>, engaging pegs 23 attached to a carrier 24 for the bevel gear 8. Whilst sliding movement of the carrier 24 is thus permitted rotation is prevented by means of its squared end 24a slidably engaging the member 12. Individual ratchet clutches are provided for driving the rear wheels instead of a differential gear and the front wheels are driven by individual friction clutches. The latter clutches may be controlled to assist the steering. The rear unit 2 is capable of limited rotation about the longitudinal axis of the casing 12.
