Abstract

A method of producing a workpiece from metal powder, with or without other powders, consists in producing a number of preliminary bodies by subjecting bodies, preformed from said powder, to one or more plastic deformation operations and then uniting a number of said preliminary bodies in at least one further plastic deformation operation. The deformation operations consist of extrusion, drawing, die pressing, forging, rolling and upsetting. Arrangement of the preliminary bodies may give a finished body varying in its properties from side to side. Non-metallic powders such as silicon, carbon, carbides, oxides and nitrides may be added. Powder may be added between operations. In an exmaple, a 25 per cent Si, 75 per cent Al powder of 0,06 mm. grain size was preformed and then extruded into bars of 13 mm. dia.; 25 such bars were then bundled and extruded to a diameter of 20 mm.
