761,244. Telescopic struts; pit props. ONIONS, J. H. Oct. 4, 1954 [Sept. 1, 1953], No. 24114/53. Class 20(2) A telescopic strut such as a pit prop consists of a cylinder 12 and plunger 16, adapted to be extended in light load conditions by means of fluid pressure from a service main or from an external pump, the plunger 16 being surrounded by a frictional clamping ring 34 which rests against the edge of the cylinder 12 and is operable to frictionally clamp the props in an extended position. The actuating fluid, such as compressed air. is supplied to the interior of the prop through a non-return valve 27 in the head 17 of the pluriger. A bolt 19 passes through a hole 25 in a plate 23 at the lower end of the plunger and is screwed into the bottom 13 of the cylinder whereby its head 20 limits the extension of the prop by abutment with the plate 23. The clamping ring 34 carries a friction pad 38 and is formed with lugs 40 through which pass a threaded spindle 44 carrying nuts 42 of opposite hand abutting against the outer faces of the lugs 40. The nuts 42 are held against rotation by a key 46 and the spindle 44 is provided with a non-circular portion 45 engaged by a handle 48 which can be rotated through 90 degrees to tighten or to release the clamping ring. Alternatively the spindle may be rotated by a spanner engageable with the portion 45. The plunger 16 may be tapered, with its larger diameter at the upper end.
