In an electrical apparatus including an electric motor 2 and equipment 1, e.g. a compressor, to be driven thereby and in which the motor rotor 3 is hermetically sealed with the equipment in a casing 8 and the motor stator 5 is mounted outside the casing, the latter includes a thin sleeve 15 disposed in the rotor/stator air gap 16 and extending axially beyond each end of the stator core 6 such extensions being reinforced by a mechanical connection with the stator which connection comprises means interposed between and in intimate contact with the extensions and adjacent part of the stator winding 7. As shown, the means comprises a bond 21 of electrically insulating material, e.g. a thermosetting resin such as an epoxy or ethoxylene resin, and the casing also includes a series of sleeves 14, 13 and 17, 18 of progressively increasing thickness extending from each end of the sleeve 15 and a re-entrant cup 19 welded at 20 to sleeve 18 sealing the motor end of the casing. The rotor shaft 4 is supported by a bearing sleeve 11 mounted in a collar 12 in a head portion 9 of the casing, and the stator 5 is supported by a band 5a having a plurality of arms 7a secured to the head portion 9a. The sleeve 5 is of non-magnetic material having a high electrical resistivity.
