Abstract

760,940. Stoppers. PRIDHAM, J. E. Oct. 5, 1954 [Oct. 16, 1953; Feb. 9, 1954], Nos. 28611/53 and 3828/54. Class 125(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a closure device e.g. a bottle stopper, having a frusto-conical spigot 7 engaging in a cylindrical socket 1, or vice versa, and a resilient ring 14 which is rolled into a sealing position between the spigot and socket members 7, 1, a shallow radial shoulder 13a is formed in either the socket or spigot against which the ring 14 is initially located and which causes the ring to commence an even rolling motion when the spigot is inserted into the socket. The device is shown as forming a hose pipe coupling device but the spigot 7 may be formed as a stopper for a bottle neck. The sealing ring 14 is initially located in a groove 13 immediately behind a flange 10. On insertion of the spigot 7 into the socket 1 the ring is first pressed by the socket member 1 against the shoulder 13a and then is rolled evenly along a frusto-conical surface 11 into its seating position. The spigot and socket members are held together by a bayonet-type coupling member 5 in which engage lugs 3 formed on the socket 1. The second Provisional Specification describes a stopper provided with a double tapered surface arranged so that when the stopper is fully inserted, the sealing ring is rolled to a position beyond the maximum diameter of the tapered section so that the ring resists withdrawal of the stopper.
