[Also in Group XV] A label for attachment to a textile article consists of a sheet 8 of fibrous material from which a portion (or portions) have been removed to form a hole (or holes) 8a and a layer of plastic material covers the hole (or holes) and is capable of being softened, the fibrous material being substantially impervious to the plastic when the plastic is softened. A strip of waterresistant paper 8 has holes 8a punched as shown in Fig. 1. The sheet is then covered with a layer of polyvinyl chloride, the layer being attached to the sheet by heat and pressure or by an adhesive such as gum arabic or cellulose acetate. The composite sheet is then cut along the lines 8c. As shown in Fig. 3, a double thickness of the plastic 10 is completely enclosed by paper 9. Alternatively, the holes may be made after coating the paper with polyvinyl chloride. When the. paper is cut and folded, a double thickness of paper will embrace a double thickness of plastic but only a single thickness of plastic is beneath each hole in the label. As shown in Fig. 5, the polyvinyl chloride is not completely enclosed by the paper but is exposed as indicated at 10a. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7, a hole 11a is located in a single thickness of paper 11 which is coated with a single thickness of polyvinyl chloride 12 only in the region of the hole 11a so that part of the label is left uncoated to allow for marking.
