Abstract

760,734. Steam turbines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 11, 1955 [March 12, 1954], No. 7260/54. Class 110 (3). In a diaphragm structure for the low-pressure stage of a steam turbine, the stator blades are made partially or wholly of porous metal and by means of internal passages in the diaphragm structure are connected to a receiver at a lower pressure than the turbine stage, whereby moisture impinging on or flowing over the porous surface of the blade is drawn off. The blade in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a tubular portion 1 at the leading edge made of porous sintered metal, and a solid main portion 2, for example, of stainless steel. The portion 2 is cast into an outer ring 3 and into the centre plate 4 of the diaphragm. The tubular portion 1 is brazed into outer and inner hollow rings 5 and 6 and these rings are connected by screws 7 to the outer ring 3 and the centre-plate 4. The outer and inner rings 5, 6 are each formed in upper and lower portions 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP> and 5<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> and these are connected by drainage pipes 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP> and vent pipes 81, 8<SP>11</SP> to the receiver 10 which may be a feed heater or the condenser of the turbine plant. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the blade is hollow and is made in two halves 13, 14, each of porous metal, such as porous sintered stainless steel, welded together at the leading edge and near the trailing edge. The outer ring and the centre plate of the diaphragm into which these blades are cast have circumferential passages which connect with the blade passages. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the blade 19 is made of solid metal such as stainless steel, and has recesses 20 on both sides, the recesses being covered by porous sintered metal inserts 21 brazed in.
