Abstract

760,676. Pneumatic wheels. DOLEMAN, T. Dec. 15, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 23076/52. Class 144 (1). In a pneumatic wheel wherein a pneumatic tube carrying inner rim 1 resiliently supports a solid or cushion-tyre-carrying outer rim 2 which fits therearound on three sides, the outer rim 2 is assembled from two large rim segments which are spacedly connected by wedge-shaped side-plate segments 10. The outer rim is of channel-section, with radially inwardly extending side walls to embrace the inner rim 1 the tyre 4 being retained on the outer rim base, which may be flat or arcuate, by circumferential flanges 9. The inner rim 1 is integral with, or attached to, a wheel disc and has corrugations, projections, or, as shown, slotted flanges 25 on its side walls to engage corresponding corrugations, slots, or, as shown, radial lugs 7 provided on the outer rim 2. Assembly of the wheel is effected by ellipsing the two large rim segments around the inner rim 1 and deflated tube 3, fitting the solid or cushion tyre 4 over the outer rim segments, inflating the tube 3, and then securing the side-plate segments 10 to complete the circular outer rim. The outer rim base may be completed by flat rectangular plates which engage with and extend between opposed plate segments 10 to bridge the base gaps between the large segments. The tube 3 may be encased in packing material as a protection against chafing by its enclosing rim surfaces, and seals 8 may be provided between the adjacent faces of the inner and outer rims.
