Abstract
888,004. Resilient wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Sept. 9, 1958 [Sept. 24, 1957], No. 29913/57. Class 144 (1). A resilient railway wheel comprises a flanged rim 1 having an inner periphery of convex cross-section which is supported on a resilient diaphragm 9 bridging the mouth of a trough 6 provided at the outer periphery of the wheel web 2, the diaphragm 9 and trough 6 defining an inflatable chamber and the convex surface of the rim ensuring that on increase of load on the wheel there is an increase in the contact area between the rim and the diaphragm adjacent the rail-contacting portion of the rim. As shown, the rim 1 has an integral radially inwardly extending flange 4 at one side and a corresponding detachable flange 5 at the other side to provide axial location of the web 2 therebetween, the outer peripheral trough 6 of the web 2 comprising two parts bolted together with a sealing ring 8 therebetween. The side walls of the trough 6 are recessed to seat inextensible beads 10 of a flat annular rubber diaphragm 9 which is reinforced with metal or textile cords 12. The outer periphery of the diaphragm has a central circumferential rib 13 to locate in a groove in the convex surface of the rim, and an annular rubber buffer 14 bonded to a metal ring is located in central recess at the base of the trough 6, the buffer serving to support the load in the event of deflation of the chamber defined by the diaphragm and trough.
