Abstract
760,611. Laminated materials and articles. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 5803/54. Addition to 723,631, [Group IV (a)]. Class 140. Laminated materials and articles are made by bonding to other solid material by means of heat and pressure a film of polythene that has been irradiated with ultra-violet light to improve its bonding properties. The other solid material may be metal sheet or foil, paper, cardboard, cotton fabric, bonded fibre fabric, wood, paint (e.g. as a coating on wood), films of vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, cellulose acetate, or regenerated cellulose film. The superposed layers may be passed over a heated metal roller against which they are pressed by a second roller, or may be pressed between two heated sealing jaws, adhesion of the polythene to the heated jaw being prevented by interposing a sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene, or coating with silicone grease or polytetrafluoroethylene. The products may be used for bags and packages for holding wet or liquid products, vacuum packaging. Polythene-lined wooden boxes and metal containers may be made.
