Abstract

760,530. Moulding reinforced plastic sheets. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. July 12, 1954 [July 27, 1953], No. 20263/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] Sheets or sheeting of fibre-reinforced plastic are made by feeding a liquid thermosetting resin onto a flexible moving film, then depositing short lengths of fibres on to the resin, embedding them therein, covering with another flexible film, partially curing, moulding-as by corrugating-and finally curing. The flexible films, which may be of regenerated cellulose or cellulose acetate, may be removed from the final sheet. The resin may be a polyester, phenol-or ureaformaldehyde, or mixtures of polyesters with partially polymerized acrylic resins or with partially polymerized styrenes, with a catalyst if desired, and the fibres may be of chopped glass strand or cellulose, nylon, or rayon. The resin is fed from a hopper 27, Fig. 2, on to a flexible film 22 carried by a conveyor 19 ; glass yarn 31 cut into short lengths 18 by cutting apparatus 30 falls through hood 37 on to the resin, spiral rollers 38, 39, threaded in opposite senses, then press the fibres into the resin and a sheet 41 is applied to the top of the reinforced resin by rollers 42, 43. Excess air is removed by the pressure of a curved metal strip 46 to give a cross-section as shown in Fig. 6 to the resin sandwich. A thin mat of glass fibres may be enclosed by the surface films to sandwich the reinforced resin core. The resin is then partly cured by heating means 47, e.g. resistance or infra-red heating, or alternatively by ultraviolet radiation. The sheet is placed between moulding members, which may be corrugated, while still flexible and finally removed to a curing chamber after which the films may be removed.
